If you’re here you may be at the beginning of your business journey or even have started but need to clarify your target audience to help your overall business strategy (including Marketing!).
So this blog article will give you a breakdown of how to find out who your target audience is and what tools you can use to develop the customer profile.
1. Do some Research
You need to look at current accounts in your chosen social media that embody those who would be likely to purchase your service/product.
Make notes on details and interesting things you find out like if they are a fan of a certain TV show, this’ll be useful later.
Another good technique is looking at people who follow your competitors, what age range do you reckon
Ask your friends what they think! Some of your friends may even encompass your target audience so get picking their brains! See what interesting accounts or hashtags they follow as well.
2. Look at your Analytics and previous Customers' Demographics

So if you’ve already started your social media pages and they’ve been active a while, you can get an insight into your target audience through the Insights Tool, especially in Meta Business Suite for Instagram and Facebook. (Here's mine below!)

It can also tell you if your posts have reached people who don’t currently follow your account, whereabouts they are based (which is good if you do region-specific services like Dorset), and gender and age ranges.

You can even use these tools to see how your social marketing is doing and whether you need to review your strategy through stats like Post Reach.
Some results may surprise you but it means you can cater your strategy to your new audience as well!
3. Create a Report or profile, based on what you’ve seen
A profile should include:

Age
Gender
Life Insights
Likes/Dislikes of Media
Lifestyle/Style Likes
Preffered Social Media
This will be useful to refer to as you go along with your business and it may change! You may also have several target audiences which are normal especially if you offer a range of products/services.
Why should you detail all of this? This helps show you;
Where your audience will be Digitally (e.g. They spend hours on Facebook so you should create a Facebook Page and ensure you’re posting through there on the regular),
What they like Lifestyle/Style wise (e.g. if they are minimalist, your more straightforward products would be perfect for them! So you'd utilise the #minimalist hashtag to get your product showing in their feed)
What they like in the Media (e.g. you can create posts or memes from Love Island that they’d like! It also makes you seem more human and relatable.)
Conclusion
So now you’ve done your research and set your Target Audience. What now?
You can utilise this to help inspire your Marketing Strategy, especially with your Social Media Posts and accounts.
