Posing Tips for Portraits

Not everyone likes posing for photos whether it be at weddings, for work, family portraits. SO as someone who also gets awkward and self-conscious about photos and is a photographer, here are some tips to help you next time the camera comes out!

Tip No.1 - Change your Position

If you're self-conscious about your body shape, a good way to add depth to your pose is to turn slightly to the side (or about 35 degrees if we're getting technical). This helps the light highlight your angles and curves in the photo.

Tip No. 2 - Chin Out, Shoulders Back

Don't tuck yourself in, make sure to stick your chin out as it'll make you appear more confident and less likely to get your chins in (my personal enemy!). This also helps relieve any stress in your back which can help you feel and appear more relaxed.

Tip No. 3 - Push out your Knee

This adds dimension to your body but relaxes your stance. You'll look open and personable, also a little sassy if you pop a hand on your hip! It also helps certain parts of your body (like your tummy) relax more and is more likely to soften clothing lines too.

Tip No. 4 - Add some SASS

Tilt your head, give a cheeky grin, and a little wink. Put a hand in a pocket or on your hip. Or even throw up a love heart or stick your tongue out. By putting bait of flair you’ll enjoy yourself a bit more and make the photo more memorable too.

Bonus Tips!

If you are feeling SUPER self-conscious and not too confident - utilise a prop like a bag or a pillow to hide a flaw if it’ll make you feel better.

(I used pillows to hide my tummy for some shots I took a while ago, helped me feel better and made me feel more chilled!)

Or use people! Especially if you are a bit taller make sure to have someone shorter in front but get your gorgeous face in.
